To Rome With Love

To Rome With Love is about a mediocre Woody Allen trying hard to be funny. Well, but you don't complain because he's Woody Allen and even a genius needs rest.

The story is pretty interesting, just like Midnight in Paris however it fails to add an effective addition of humor. Like a dish with all the perfect ingredients but not the right taste.

I'll still am a Woody Allen fan though.

The Girl Next Door

Chick Flicks. They’re clichéd, overly sweet and perfect in an unreal way.

The girl next door is all the above things and more. Emile Hirsch plays the chocolatey young boy with real conviction, the plot is clichéd but the screenplay saves it for the movie. The story packs in some turns on the way and does not end up being a usual chick flick but a chick flick with some difference.

You can watch this movie on a lazy afternoon when it’s too sunny outside and you’re too lazy even to take a nap.

Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana

Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, as the title itself suggests, is a comedy movie. But unlike most comedy movies, this one packs up a unique story. The plot is fresh and different, but the movie stumbles due to a not-so-good screenplay.

There are laughs centered around a single character in the story however the movie as a whole isn't that laugh-worthy. The screenplay goes totally out of place by the end. Even though the script did have a couple high lights in it. the movie loses itself due to the slow pace of the movie.

If this would've been book, I may have enjoyed it. But as a movie, I can only commend the mere idea and the plot which could've been executed better.

But that's just my opinion.

Heaven on Earth

Another Deepa Mehta movie, high on feminist sentiments. Priety Zinta stands out in this one. The movie is intense, the story lukewarm and the screenplay just about right. The movie is interestingly shot and tries to strike an element of depth in the story. However the story itself is dependent to much on the parallel interpretation of a folklore. Such an idea worked for Fire, which is still my favorite Deepa Mehta movie. However Heaven on Earth fails to create a realistic appeal in the story.

Overall, Heaven on Earth is a strictly "okayish" movie. Priety Zinta surely makes her mark.

Gangs of Wesseypur

Welcome to Wesseypur. The land of power, politics and murders. The movie is a no-sugar-coated take on the brutal reality that revolves around small-town politics, where important decisions are just a gun shot away and the male centered society prefers to reach important decisions through mass murdering and shoot-outs.

Wesseypur as a story is pretty interesting, nicely written. Wesseypur as a movie, is a good watch. Certainly something that's very different as compared to the usual "Bollywood" standards.

The movie's motive is to depict small-town politics. It's gripping, but the movie is long and the story takes leaps and jumps in between. The violence and the rawness is pretty evident but somewhere the story loses the track by just an inch. It's like stories that encircle each other in a very redundant pattern, in such a way that you may get lost. GOW, to me was good. Strictly good. Different. Brutal. But, strictly good. I may differ from the popular opinion which acclaims this movie, because most people like movies that grip their imaginations and keep their brains ticking through a twisted plot-within-a-plot format. But yes, I'm different in ways that don't really match the ways of the world.

Next up, GOW 2.

Gandu

Gandu. Shocking. Dirty. Real. Rage, Un-explainable.

The aforementioned words describe this one-of-a-kind shocking movie. Can't really say much about Gandu for I fail to understand its essence amidst all the explicitness. You can't really paint a picture completely in black. It can have a dark shade but a completely black picture blinds its beauty to the onlookers. Hope you get what I mean.

Watch Gandu at your own risk.

My Rating- 2/5 [2 marks just for the soundtrack]

The Dictator

Just like other Sasha Baron Cohen movies, this one is mad too. Like really mad. But gone are the days when you could easily laugh at stupidity and filth. It only gets as good as Borat for me.

The Dictator is just mildly amusing, assured to give you a few giggles. But nothing more. But the good part is, the movie does tell you a story. The gags are mindless. Spare this one for a day when you're too lazy to watch a movie and don't mind watching just about anything.

The Big Lebowski

The Big Lebowski  is just a comedy movie with not a really strong plot. The characters though are funny but the story is not gripping enough. There will be a few giggles here and there, the soundtrack is good. The movie is a cult somehow but it failed to impress me.

I have not much to say about this one. Maybe because I’m also sleepy by the end of this movie.

At First Sight

At First Sight is a movie that's different simply because it tells a true story that doesn't fail the surprise you. The movie does tell a different story but it misses to present the story with a certain degree of depth. The dialogues and the depiction is very shallow. The movie could have been better with the kind of story that it has.

The film also drags during the later half and by then you may have lost interest in the story and even the hard hitting scenes might just not hit you.

Conclusion. At First Sight could've been a better a movie.

Also, Val Kilmer is really commendable in his role.

Chungking Express

Chungking Express is a Hong Kong film that's neither so impressive nor too disappointing, but somehow manages to create an impact.

The movie makes a couple of bold attempts in terms of camera work. The story as a whole isn't very full proof, but is good in glimpses.

In the end, you do not regret watching the movie which is definitely something different in terms of technicalities of film making.

And you also end up thanking the movie for introducing you to this song that's largely used in the movie in a very beautiful manner.

Amadeus

It's true that geniuses are born, not made. This conception is very much apt for Mozart. Amadeus largely brings to light the greatness of the musical genius, Mozart. The depictions that justify Mozart's genius are –

1.    At a very young age, Mozart was shown playing in front of the Pope in Rome.

2.    It was said that Mozart had written his first concerto at the age of 4, his first symphony at the age of 7 and his first opera at the age of 12.

3.    Mozart was able to play Antonio Salieri’s “March of Welcome” just by listening it once. He even went about improvising the piece which Salieri had managed to compose with immense labor.

4.    Even on his death bed, Mozart was dictating detailed musical compositions to Salieri.

Despite having talent of the highest degree, Mozart's character did have certain grey shades to it. He was completely aware of the ability he possessed, which made him very arrogant. Mozart was shown very “ruthless” to other composers; something which is clearly evident by how he mocked every composer's musical style in the movie. This proves that the character of Mozart did not regard anyone else’s talent due to the feeling of superiority he possessed. "A little modesty might suit you better" Chamberlain had said to Mozart, an advice that was very apt to his character.

Mozart was highly sensitive about his art. He didn't like the emperor and his men toying with his creations. Mozart dedication towards his talent made him neglect his responsibilities. The dedication with which he focused on his primary interest made him blind to the negligence he had towards his family. Mozart not only placed his talent at an elevated standard, but also wasn't grounded to the reality of his own life. His ego prevented him to have a pupil who's family didn't give his art due respect. Mozart did not understand the value of money in life; he weighed his pride and ego more than it.

Amadeus as a movie definitely leaves you with an insight about the psyches of creative individuals and the superiority with which they start regarding themselves. It can rightly be concluded that with great artistic abilities comes a bloated ego. The movie does not let any melodrama or emotions pose a distraction to the narration. The movie shows glimpses of humor, with Mozart’s high pitched laugh that can be considered as a response to the world that did not understand his art. The story progression tends to slow down in the middle, but does provide a suitable detailing to the entire story.

In the end one comes to realize that the life of a genius is not a walk in the park. Geniuses like Mozart constantly stumble to the worldly shunning, with people exploiting their talent and their enviers targeting their success. It’s sad the tragic end that many geniuses like Mozart have suffered. Maybe truly gifted beings are like sparks that display brilliance as long as they last, but very soon they depart, leaving an entire world mesmerized.

Funny Games

An Austrian movie that depicts violence in a very different fashion. As far as the story goes, it's very off-beat. But the film manages to grip you in a very terrifying way.

The only interesting thing about Funny Games is it's film making aspect. How the movie tries to create a one-on-one impact on the viewer. You would only understand this once you watch the movie.

In short, Funny Games is a different movie that has an ability to terrify you without the depiction of blood or gore. It depicts violence in a not-so-violent manner. To know what I'm talking about, you'll have to watch the movie.

I wouldn't recommend this movie to an average movie watcher. Those who love to discover something new wouldn't be very disappointed.

London Paris New York

A sad sad chick flick, although the story is pretty decent but it's imposingly presented and thereby looks very fake and unbelievable  . And you can't force the romance in a romantic movie, it should have a certain amount of realism before you progress to the dreamy level of clicheness and then show anything.

It's like the movie makers just wanted to show a couple kissing behind the backdrop of exotic locations. The purpose is served however the romance and the feel has been compromised. The cinematographer hasn't made use of the full potential, of the locations those grand places in the movie title offer.

Overall, the movie does make an attempt to create the magic. And despite the failure, I always value a trial.

Sarfarosh

Since I've been watching a lot of old movies, I just thought of randomly watching this Aamir Khan starrer from the 90s.

I'm an Aamir Khan fan but I won't say that this is his best performance. The movie as a whole is actually a good story but it lags in the screenplay which doesn't compliment the concept. Aamir Khan has a strong character and a few applaud-able dialogue sequences. Actor Mukesh Rishi also has a commendable role in the movie.

The movie bagged a Filmfare in the best film critics category. Which may be because the subject of the movie was based on the much hyped Indo-Pak disturbance.

The story of the movie is surely commendable but the screenplay is a tad bit random at certain instances and could be notch higher. Just by opinion though.

Nonetheless, Cheers to the good old Sizzling Sonali Bendre, Jagjit Singh's "Hoshwalon ko Khabar Kya" and the phenomenal perfectionist Mr. Aamir Khan who was on a course of self-progression during those days.

The Trip

I wanted to see this movie due to my curiosity related to LSD, the popular psychedelic drug of the 60s. It was legal during those days and this movie was made after the drug was made illegal. The movie is someone's perspective on how an LSD experience might "look" like.

This is a very different movie with some really strong psychedelic imagery. The plot is pretty much nothing and the entire objective is to present something abstract that can be interpreted in any way. The movie just takes a peek into a mind that's on a psychedelic influence.

There's a genre of movies like Trainspotting and Requiem For a Dream which are known as stoner movies because they involve a series of events related to drug use. The Trip is a stoner movie in actual senses, the movie does not mean anything but it tries to recreate a psychedelic experience by placing it in a rough plot.

Watch it as an experiment, not something that will blow your mind but will definitely amuse you by the way it's filmed.

Oh and the movie is written by the awesome Jack Nicholson.

Hair

This is the first Hollywood musical I've seen and it was nice to get a glimpse of this genre of movies. For an average movie goer such movies may not hold much appeal. Because you never know when the characters may break into a song making you go, "Dude. Not again!"

Apart from the insane song and dance that largely interrupts the story progression, this is a good movie. To be frank I picked this movie just to feed by curiosity about the hippie culture of the 60s. However the depiction of hippies in the movie looks very much fictitious something shown just to entertain.

The movie is inspired by the broadway musical going by the same name. The movie is set in the political scenario of the 60s, involving the Vietnam war and the hippie movement in response to it. However the subject is just used as a backdrop, and prime focus involves the story and humor.

Watch this one, if you want to watch something different and are patient enough to sit through the countless song sequences. Hair, is strictly good.

Houseful 2

This movie belongs to the usual commercial class of Akshay Kumar comedies. The only relief is that it packs up a plot, puts in a lot of twists though. Due to the twists the movie tends to become a thriller. The consolation prizes are few laughable moments, a John Abraham who will succeed in cracking you up and an Akshay Kumar who makes his character stand out.

It's real tough to make a good comedy movie, this fact still continues to be true.

Houseful 2 is passable, unless you have insane proportions of curiosity and tolerance.

Dazed and Confused

One of those movies where there isn't much of a plot and the whole point is to depict something. That's what this movie is about, random depictions of the American student life. The movie has already attained a cult status maybe because it does depict the American school culture with a very realistic approach. It's something only an American upbringing can understand and appreciate.

For a regular movie goer, this is a strictly average movie with some amusing characters that try to show the types of personalities you can come across when it comes to the youth in the US.

A highlight of the movie, is its soundtrack. Catchy rock songs keep accompanying the story progression.

The Change Up [2011]

One of those movies where the plot is very obvious. A look at the poster above will give you an idea as to what the movie's about. But the good part is that the movie has its own funny moments that are genuinely funny and that just saves any comedy movie and that's just what saved this movie too.

The movie however stretches, to make the ends meet, so that we somehow reach the much awaited happily-ever-after scenario. However a few touchy moments make up for the lag and make you smile.

Overall, strictly okay.

Match point [2005]

A strictly okay-ish movie in my opinion, tells a not-so-normal story in a very predictable manner. Drags a little, tries to add an element of surprise to the story but ends up being a pretty normal movie.

I’ve seen really bad movies too. I’m not saying that this is a bad movie however there is nothing special about it too. Watch this one just in case there is nothing else to watch. You won’t be disappointed by the story; however you won’t really be that amused too.
